Meet the Team

Yaw Adansi-Pipim

Co-Founder & Co-Curator, TEDxTottenham

In a few words I’m passionate about friendships, learning from others, my amazing wife, the economic development of Sub-Saharan Africa, my Maker, Family, Medicine, Tech, The entrepreneurial spirit, and that’s just on a Monday!
I’ve been a part of TEDxTottenham since its inception and believe that it could be an amazing tool to see real change within the community.

What is your position within the team?

Head of “encouragement” although the team may disagree…

What is your favourite TEDxTottenham moment or memory from previous years?

Gathering with speakers, performers and the community in a local pub after our first ideas festival. The energy was immense!

What is your favourite place in Tottenham?

The former Broadwater farm playcentre building. A red triangular structure with too many memories to recount…

What does synergy mean to you?

That there is power in the “collective”!

Catherine Adansi-Pipim

Co-Founder & Co-Curator, TEDxTottenham

I’m Catherine and could describe myself as many things: new mother, wife (to Yaw), public health doctor, co-curator of TEDxTottenham, daughter, sister, Christian, of Ghanaian heritage.  . . and so much more!

I have been involved in TEDxTottenham since the first event in 2014. Yaw and I were inspired to start doing TEDxTottenham when we attended TEDxBrixton in 2013. We saw how powerful it was to bring people together to share ideas, stories and inspiring words and really wanted to bring that to Tottenham – the area where Yaw grew up.

What is your position within the team?

I work alongside Yaw as Co-Curator, with a particular focus on recruitment of volunteers for the events. As Co-Curator, my role is to help shape the event each year, provide some leadership for the team, and basically do whatever I can to make sure that the event is the best it can possibly be. I took a bit of step back from my role last year due to the birth of our daughter but am back to form for this year’s event.

What is your favourite TEDxTottenham moment or memory from previous years?

Wow…it’s hard to say as there have been so many but I think there is always that excitement at the start of the event just before it all kicks off when you’re just so pleased that you’ve made it to that point after months of hard work and are just about to see the fruit of all the preparation and planning. It’s a really nice place to be.

What is your favourite place in Tottenham?

I really like the hustle and bustle of West Green Road. The people, the shops, the different characters that you come across. . . it reminds me a bit of being in Ghana and I love being in that midst of that type of environment.

What does synergy mean to you?

From my perspective, synergy means working with others to accomplish more than you could on your own. We hope to have some great ideas and discussion of the best ways to achieve synergy at this year’s TEDxTottenham!

Natalie Carter

Speaker Liaison Officer, TEDxTottenham

In my day to day life I am a commercial real estate lawyer and work for a city law firm. I work on redevelopment projects across the UK as well as buying and selling property all over the UK.

I have been involved with TedxTottenham from the first year it started. I was born and raised in Tottenham so as soon as I found out there was going to be a TedxTottenham I just had to get involved.

What is your position within the team?

I am the speaker liaison officer. I look after the speakers and support them before during and after their talks. I also come up with suggestions on who should speak and approach potential speakers.

What is your favourite TEDxTottenham moment or memory from previous years?

I love every minute of working on the TEDx Tottenham team! There are so many great moments I can’t just pick one! The best part of working on the TEDx Tottenham team has to be making new friends. Each TEDx Tottenham is a great experience and we grow closer as a team each time.

What is your favourite place in Tottenham?

Chick King – Best Fried Chicken in North London. SNM

What does synergy mean to you?

Working together to achieve more than you can as individuals. A fist is stronger than five fingers.

Ernest Kissiedu

Sponsorship and Community Engagement, TEDxTottenham

I have a passion for technology and innovation, specifically as a graphics programmer. I believe that technology and the progress it can inspire works as an empowering catalyst for a community.

Being able to use the TED platform and brand to spread ideas and spark conversations around the exciting evolution of Tottenham has been a privilege.

I’ve been a part of the TEDxTottenham team from the beginning and over the past 3 years it has been an incredibly fulfilling journey. It has given me an opportunity to engage positively and creatively with the community I was born and raised in.

What is your position within the team?

This year I am a part of the sponsorship and community engagement team, this has allowed me to be directly on the ground meeting lots of amazing people who do amazing things in Tottenham. Whether this has been meeting with interesting new businesses like Craving Coffee and Chicken Town or established longstanding community hubs like Broadwater Farm Community Centre,  Zen Records or The Beehive Pub, I’ve been able to see first-hand why Tottenham is such a vibrant, burgeoning place for new creative arrivals as well as people who have lived in the area for generations.

What is your favourite TEDxTottenham moment or memory from previous years?

My favourite moment from TEDxTottenham was the performances from last year. Ballet Black were mesmerizing, House Gospel Choir were uplifting and Alim Karmara gave us wit and charm with his unique brand of West African storytelling. Another highlight from last year was the talk given by Doughty Street lawyer Tunde Okewale MBE. His talk on whether we really need role models and the soft bigotry of low expectations was very thought provoking and it resonated with me greatly.

What is your favourite place in Tottenham?

My favourite place in Tottenham is the Lordship Lane Recreational Park. It has a very special place in my heart because it’s the park I grew up playing in. I have many fond childhood memories there and I remember being captivated by all of the different things you could do when playing there. It has since been renovated and turned into an amazing community hub.

What does synergy mean to you?

To me, synergy in the context of TEDxTottenham means creative collaboration within a community; taking the best parts of a community and melding them together.

I think at the core of any community’s synergy is co-operation, respect, inclusivity and interdependence. Knowing and understanding that we all depend on each other to make our community better, whether it is the businesses, the residents (both old and new) or local government, is essential. Essentially, I believe that synergy means collaborating in order to make a community like Tottenham the best it can be. I also think that synergy can work as a creative force of unity that drives things forward and can give a community the resolve to overcome any challenges it may face.

Mary Mbema

Event Management, TEDxTottenham

I am currently the head of RE, in an inner school in London and I have been teaching for longer than you’d guess. Thankfully, it is something I enjoy and young people always have something amusing to say.

I’ve been with TEDxTottenham from the very beginning and I am now part of the events team, Tottenham is a great yet sometimes overlooked part of London and having an opportunity to showcase brilliant ideas and people in this area was an opportunity I knew I had to be a part of.

What is your position within the team?

As a member of the events team, I help ensure that we have the right venue for the event, a brilliant technical team and the general running of the day.

What is your favourite TEDxTottenham moment or memory from previous years?

It’s incredibly difficult to choose my favourite talk (everyone has been brilliant), so I’ll steer away from that and choose the moment the first ever TEDxTottenham wrapped up. It seems, it’s only after the event do you realise the magnitude of how much the team had achieved in a relatively short period of time. Not only did we receive great feedback from the attendees but we successfully highlighted how wonderful and remarkable Tottenham and its residents are.

What is your favourite place in Tottenham?

Craven Coffee and Chicken Town are both great places for food, however, Broadwater Farm was my first introduction to Tottenham. Its iconic past reveals a lot about the history of Tottenham which I find fascinating.

What does synergy mean to you?

TEDxTottenham perfectly encapsulates synergy. The combined efforts of every participant has ensured the success of every event we have held so far and those yet to come.
